Common Printing Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Printing shouldn’t be a headache. But small mistakes can lead to blurry images, white lines around the edges, or colours that don’t look quite right. Most of these problems are easy to avoid if you know what to look out for. Below are some of the most common issues we see, and how to prevent them.

Using low-quality images

Images can look fine on a screen but appear blurred or pixelated when printed.

How to avoid it: Use original photos where possible and avoid screenshots or images taken from websites. If you are unsure about image quality, you can always send your file to us to check before printing.

No bleed on the artwork

Without bleed, thin white lines can appear around the edge of the finished print after trimming.

How to avoid it: Add a 3mm bleed all the way around your design, keep important text and logos away from the edges, and use a template if one is available.

Text too close to the edge (no safe zone)

Even when bleed is added, text placed too close to the edge can be cut off during trimming.

How to avoid it: Leave a clear safe zone around the edge of your design and keep important information well inside this area.

Colours not matching the screen

Screens and printers display colour differently, so printed colours may not look exactly the same as they do on your computer.

How to avoid it: Design using CMYK colour mode, avoid very bright or fluorescent colours, and request a hard-copy proof if colour accuracy is vital.

Choosing the wrong paper type

Paper choice has a big impact on how colours and images appear. Uncoated paper absorbs more ink, which can make colours look flatter or duller compared to gloss or silk finishes.

How to avoid it: If colour and image quality are important, consider using gloss or silk stock for a sharper, more vibrant result. Our highly-experienced account managers are happy to advise you on the best option for your project.

Sending the wrong type of file

Some file types can cause fonts to change or layouts to shift when printed.

How to avoid it: Where possible, supply a print-ready PDF and make sure fonts are embedded. If you are unsure, check with us before sending your files.

Text that is too small

Text that looks clear on screen can be difficult to read once printed.

How to avoid it: Use at least 8pt for main body text and avoid thin or decorative fonts for important details.

Poor contrast

Light text on a light background is difficult to read, especially at smaller sizes.

How to avoid it: Use dark text on light backgrounds (or the reverse), avoid placing text over busy images, and always check that your content is easy to read.

Not checking your proof thoroughly

Typos and incorrect details are easy to miss, especially when you are in a hurry. We can provide digital or hard-copy proofs for you to check and approve before your job goes to print.

How to avoid it: Always read your proof carefully, ask someone else to check it if possible, and double-check contact details, dates and any other important information.
